Bomar, a fifth-round 2009 draft choice out of Sam Houston State who saw more extensive action in the preseason than any other Giants quarterback, was deemed expendable after the team dealt for veteran backup Sage Rosenfels on Friday.
Also released were defensive tackle Jay Alford, offensive lineman Jacob Bender, running back Andre Brown, defensive back Courtney Brown (waived/injured), wide receiver Tim Brown, safety John Busing, tight end Scott Chandler, defensive lineman Nate Collins, offensive lineman Jim Cordle, wide receiver Derek Hagan, defensive lineman Alex Hall (waived/injured), defensive lineman Dwayne Hendricks, defensive lineman Tommie Hill, running back Gartrell Johnson, fullback Jerome Johnson, offensive lineman Todd Londolt, defensive back Matt O'Hanlon, tight end Bear Pascoe, quarterback Dominic Randolph, defensive back Sha'eff Rashad, offensive lineman Herb Taylor, offensive lineman Guy Whimper and defensive back Seth Williams.
Notables among that group include Alford, who appeared in every game with the Giants in 2007-08; Gartrell Johnson, who appeared in 10 contests with New York last season; and Whimper, who appeared in 30 games with the team from 2006 through 2009.
On Friday night, the Giants obtained Rosenfels and running back Darius Reynaud in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings.
The Giants will open their season next Sunday, when they play host to the Carolina Panthers in the first meaningful NFL game at New Meadowlands Stadium.
